Flood Restoration 101: First Steps After A Flood

December 20th, 2016

It takes very little flooding in your home or building to cause serious damage.  If the proper steps toward flood restoration aren’t taken, the building could become an extreme hazard simply between mold and structural issues.  You have many considerations to make when tackling the task of water removal and flood restoration, but ServiceMaster Restoration and Cleaning is here to provide the tools and knowledge to get the job done right.

Stay Safe

When you’re assessing the damage done by water in your home or business, make sure you turn off all electrical sources near the water.  Bring along a flashlight so that you’re not endangering yourself and can get a good look at everything.  Even if your power isn’t working, shut off the main in the fuse box to be safe as well as any individual fuse connections.  If power does happen to be restored while you’re checking things out, you’ll be safe from electrical shock  by taking these precautions.

Suit Up

You never know what could have leaked into the standing water in your space.  To guard against contacting harmful bacteria in sewage and the like, wear waders or tall waterproof boots along with rubber gloves when venturing into your flood restoration zone.

Document Damage

Before beginning the flood restoration process, take photos of the damage for insurance purposes.  Videos are good to have as well, and digital is the best route here so that the pictures are easy to share and store.

Contact Your Insurer

Make sure you contact your insurance company immediately after any sort of flooding or water damage so that the flood restoration process can begin immediately and with the proper monetary restitution.  You’ll want to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and your insurance company can help you get there.

For expedient and thorough flood restoration services, contact ServiceMaster Restoration and Cleaning today.  We’ll have your space cleaned up, dried out, and restored safely and effectively.  Leave the dirty work to us and you’ll be back to regular programming in no time.
