3 Tips to Track Down Rogue Odors

February 23rd, 2017

Let’s talk about odors.  Scents.  Nasal offenders.  They’re everywhere and are often pleasant, uplifting, and energizing.  But all too often, we encounter a strange smell in our space that can’t be tamed, no matter our cover up attempts.  Candles, oils, and other methods of masking foul odors will only serve to frustrate you in your attempts to restore the olfactory balance in your home or office.  You need to get to the heart of this issue:  find the source.  At ServiceMaster, we’re the restoration services professionals and therefore adept at these sorts of missions.

Use Your Resources

You have a natural scent sleuth attached to your person:  your nose.  Use it!  Just make sure you’re taking proper precautions in case what you’re smelling happens to be gas related (things like methane or hydrogen sulfide can be toxic to breathe in highly concentrated amounts).  At least wear a painter’s mask if you don’t have something like a respirator handy.  Then see if you can sniff out the source.

Check around to see if there are areas of moisture in places it shouldn’t be.  Indicators are mold, condensation, and an obvious clue: dampness or wetness.  Water creates a breeding ground for a host of bacteria and bacteria is often downright stinky.

Deep Clean Hotspots

When were your carpets last shampooed?  Carpets are notorious for soaking up odors (especially pet odors, and particularly pets who aren’t well potty-trained).

What about your washer and dryer?  Front loaders in particular like to get a less than delightful buildup of biofilms (scum, mold, and what have you) that people often don’t think about.  Make sure you’re regularly cleaning those seals and you might want to even leave the washer door cracked open to let it dry out between loads.
