When you live in Wisconsin, winter storm damage shouldn’t come as a surprise. At ServiceMaster Restoration and Cleaning we’d like to remind you to think back over last year’s top winter news stories; winter storms topped the list! In February a huge winter storm blasted its icy breath across Kansas and up through Wisconsin and on to Chicago dumping as much as 20 inches of snow. If monster snowfalls aren’t enough to keep winter interesting, there are always the hazards associated with sub-zero weather. If you and your house aren’t prepared, snow and cold may do a lot of  damage to your property and be dangerous for you.

Much of the damage or injury from winter storm disasters isn’t the direct result of the storm. Wind, snow, ice and extreme cold are often the cause of other problems such as car accidents, frostbite, hypothermia and heart attacks caused from shoveling snow. Water damage to your home can result from ice dams on the roof or burst pipes during an extreme cold snap. Even more dangerous, the U.S. Fire Administration and FEMA report that the months of December through March have the highest number of house fires.

Because we’re so used to extreme weather during Wisconsin winters, it can be easy to take winter safety for granted and become lax about some basic home maintenance issues that, if ignored, could result in a winter storm disaster. Here are some tips we all need to be reminded of from time to time:

  • Get your furnace, wood burning stoves and chimneys professionally checked. Neglecting these three areas are major causes of winter house fires.
  • Have adequate insulation and ventilation in your attic. Insulation does more than just keep the inside of your house warm. Insulation and good ventilation in the attic keep the attic cold. A cold attic means less heat is escaping through the roof causing melting snow. When snow melt occurs on a warmed roof, it refreezes when it gets to the much colder roof overhang. That results in ice dams and potential water damage to the walls and ceilings of your home.
  • Keep tree branches trimmed around your house. Heavy snow or ice and high winds may cause weak branches to break and damage your roof or break a window. A large branch covered by ice can weigh over several hundred pounds.
  • Be prepared for an extended power outage during severe storms. Power lines are particularly vulnerable to breaking in the winter from ice, wind and fallen branches. During a power outage your furnace can’t run. If the outage lasts long enough, the resulting cold may cause pipes to burst. Make sure vulnerable pipes are well insulated to prevent freezing.

Despite our best efforts, winter storm disasters can still happen, causing damage to homes and businesses.
